The feature-first strategy – Reimagining electric 2W adoption in India

While the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs is inevitable, the pace varies across different vehicle segments. Notably, electric three-wheelers, dominated by e-rickshaws, have taken the lead. However, the adoption rate in the two-wheeler segment, which accounts for over 70% of total vehicle sales, remains modest at 5.4%.

To accelerate the adoption of electric two-wheelers, it’s crucial to look beyond the well-known benefits of better total cost of ownership, lower operational costs, and environmental friendliness. This article explores a fresh perspective: the plethora of innovative features that set electric two-wheelers apart from their ICE counterparts, making them not just eco-friendly alternatives but superior vehicles in terms of safety, comfort, and user experience.

Electric two-wheelers are at the forefront of connected vehicle technology, offering features that were once the domain of high-end cars:

  • Over-the-Air Updates: Much like smartphones and electric cars, these vehicles can receive software updates remotely, continuously improving performance and adding new features.
  • Integrated Navigation: With Google Maps integration, riders can navigate unfamiliar territories effortlessly, viewing directions directly on their vehicle’s display.
  • Smartphone Integration: Features like WhatsApp notification previews bring a new level of convenience to urban commuting.
  • Voice Control and Alexa Integration: Voice commands allow riders to input destinations, battery status, and more without taking their hands off the handlebars. This feature is particularly beneficial for less tech-savvy consumers, ensuring they can easily access and benefit from these advanced technologies.
  • Master App for Vehicle Control: A comprehensive app allows riders to remotely check vehicle details like State of Charge (SOC) and control various functions.
  • Telemetry and Remote Control: Riders can access real-time data about their vehicle’s performance and status.

These connectivity features transform the riding experience, making it more intuitive and aligned with our digital lifestyles, regardless of the user’s technological proficiency.

Electric two-wheelers come equipped with a suite of safety features that leverage both hardware and software innovations:

  • Intelligent Braking Systems: Features like Emergency Stop Signal, which flashes tail lights during sudden braking, and FallSafe, which shuts down the motor in case of a fall, significantly enhance rider safety.
  • Location Sharing and SOS Alerts: Live location sharing with the emergency contact and SOS push button provide an added layer of security.
  • Anti-Theft Measures: Tow and theft alerts, along with geofencing capabilities offer peace of mind to owners when their vehicles are parked.
  • Smart Lighting: Features like “Follow Me Home” headlights illuminate the path for riders even after the vehicle is turned off for additional seconds, enhancing safety in poorly lit areas.
  • Ping My Scooter: This feature helps locate the parked vehicle with flashing light alerts.
  • Hill Hold: This function automatically holds the vehicle on slopes without applying brakes, reducing rider effort and risk.
  • Side and Main Stand Sensors: These alert riders if the stand is engaged, preventing potential accidents.
  • Overspeed Alerts: Riders can set speed limits and receive alerts if they exceed them.
  • Dashcam: Some vehicles include a built-in camera to record trip details, useful for blogging, security and insurance purposes.

These safety features not only protect the rider but also instil confidence in family members, addressing a key concern in two-wheeler ownership.

Electric two-wheelers are designed with rider comfort in mind, offering features that make daily commutes more enjoyable:

  • Ergonomic Design: With no bulky engine and low centre of gravity, these vehicles offer larger, more comfortable seats and often include pillion backrests.
  • Smart Controls: Features like cruise control, auto-turn-off indicators, and parking assistance reduce rider fatigue and enhance convenience.
  • Keyless Operations: Advanced unlocking features, including proximity unlock, face ID, and voice activation, add a futuristic touch to these vehicles.
  • Customization Options: Some vehicles even allow riders to customize the sound of their usually silent vehicles, catering to those who miss the roar of traditional engines.
  • Reverse Mode: This feature aids in manoeuvring the vehicle in tight spaces, reducing physical effort.
  • Distance to Empty: Similar to cars, this feature helps riders plan their trips by showing the remaining range.
  • Service Alerts: The vehicle notifies riders when it’s time for maintenance, allowing for better planning.
  • Walk Mode: This function maintains a slow, walking-pace speed while the motor is engaged, useful in crowded areas or when the vehicle has a flat tyre.
  • Parking Assistance: A push-button feature that helps in parking the vehicle easily.

These comfort features transform the daily commute from a chore into a pleasurable experience.

A New Narrative for Electric Two-Wheelers

While environmental benefits and lower TCO remain strong selling points for electric two-wheelers, the advanced features, some of them highlighted above, set them apart as truly superior vehicles. In comparison, most existing ICE counterparts lack many of these features. From smart connectivity and enhanced safety to unparalleled comfort and convenience, these features cater to a wide range of consumers, including those who may be less comfortable with technology.

As India continues its journey towards sustainable mobility, electric two-wheelers stand out not just as alternatives to ICE vehicles, but as superior options that offer a glimpse into the future of transportation. With just around 6% of total two-wheeler sales being electric, we can expect additional waves of innovation and disruption, bringing even more advanced features to the market.

It’s time for consumers to look beyond the ‘electric’ tag and appreciate these vehicles for the technological marvels they truly are. By embracing electric two-wheelers, riders aren’t just making an eco-friendly choice or saving money – they’re stepping into a smarter, safer, and more connected future of transportation.
