Mahindra to deploy ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint for new line of EVs

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will use ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology for its new electric vehicle paint facility. This technology, which functions similarly to an inkjet printer, will start serial production in 2025.

PixelPaint technology integrates a paint head with more than 1,000 individually controlled nozzles, mounted on an ABB robot such as the IRB 5500 paint series. It incorporates ABB’s 3D vision system and is controlled by ABB’s RobotStudio® software, enabling precise tracking along the vehicle body. ABB’s RB1000i digitally-enabled paint atomizers improve transfer efficiency by 10 percent and reduce airborne waste by over 30 percent, according to company statement. The system ensures accurate reproduction of intricate details during the painting process.

“Our revolutionary PixelPaint technology can apply large areas of uniform color as well as the tiniest details with complete accuracy, without delaying the production line or the need for manual intervention,” said Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line. “By deploying PixelPaint-equipped robots in dedicated cells, Mahindra’s paint shop will be able to apply finishes such as contrasting roof and pillar treatments on its new line of EVs in a completely automated process.”

The growing demand for vehicle personalization is driving this implementation. M&M will be the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to use PixelPaint for painting contrasting roofs and pillars on its EVs. The setup includes 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family. Advanced operations like interior painting and sealing are autonomously executed, leveraging ABB’s precise systems to apply paint only where necessary. This eliminates manual masking, thereby saving time and materials.
