India ICE vs EV sales | For top 2W, 3W, 4W OEMs in August 2026

In August 2026, EV penetration stood at 10.7% in the 2W market. For 3W L5 passenger autos, EV penetration was 55.5%, while 3W L5 cargo autos recorded 31.4%. In the 4W passenger vehicle segment, EV penetration stood at 7.6%, while e-goods carriers recorded 4.9%. This article compares EV registrations with overall vehicle sales across the 2W, 3W, and 4W segments, highlighting the current level of EV adoption in each category.

In August 2026, the two-wheeler market remained predominantly ICE-driven, with Honda Motorcycle leading overall sales (4,47,160 units) while maintaining a negligible EV share of 0.2%. Hero MotoCorp followed in second place (4,13,919 units), with EVs contributing 4.6% to its volume. Among legacy OEMs, TVS Motor (13.8%) and Bajaj Auto (26.1%) demonstrated significant EV penetration, with Bajaj registering the highest EV transition rate among legacy players. Conversely, Suzuki Motorcycle India (0.04%), Royal-Enfield (0.04%), and India Yamaha Motor (0.3%) remained almost entirely ICE-dependent. Pure EV manufacturers recorded 100% electric sales, led by Ather Energy (28,733 units), followed by Ola Electric (13,849 units) and Greaves Electric (8,614 units).

In August 2026, Bajaj Auto led the passenger auto segment with 36,860 units, of which 35.3% were EVs. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility maintained near-total electrification with 98.1% of its sales being electric. TVS Motor showed strong EV penetration at 65.2%, followed by Piaggio Vehicles (24.5%) and Atul Auto (19.6%), both of which remained more ICE-dependent. Meanwhile, pure EV players Saera Electric Auto (936 units), Mini Metro (906 units), and YC Electric (782 units) recorded 100% EV sales, highlighting entirely electric portfolios in the segment.

In August 2026, Bajaj Auto led the Goods L5 three-wheeler segment with 5,355 units, of which 8.2% were EVs. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility recorded the highest EV penetration among legacy OEMs at 63.8%, followed by TVS Motor at 27.4%. Piaggio Vehicles (3.6%) and Atul Auto (5.3%) remained predominantly ICE-driven with low EV shares. Meanwhile, pure EV players YC Electric (412 units), Omega Seiki (393 units), and Dilli Electric (347 units) reported 100% EV sales, highlighting entirely electric portfolios in the segment.

In August 2026, the passenger vehicle segment was led by Maruti Suzuki India with 1,64,845 units, with EVs contributing just 0.9%. Tata Motors (22.7%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (12.9%) demonstrated notable EV adoption among the top volume players. JSW MG Motor India achieved a dominant EV share of 79.9%, while newcomer VinFast Auto India recorded 100% electric sales with 2,198 units. Hyundai Motor India (1.7%), Kia India (2.7%), and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (0.7%) reported limited EV penetration, whereas Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, Honda Cars India, Renault India, and Nissan Motor India remained entirely ICE-focused. In the luxury space, BMW India (19.7%) outpaced Mercedes-Benz India (8.4%) in EV share.

In August 2026, EVs made up 10.7% of 2W sales (down from 11.2% in July, but up from 7.7% last year). EV penetration in 3W L5M reached 55.5% (up from 51.6% in July and well above 30.9% last year), while 3W L5N stood at 31.4% (up from 30.8% in July and 22.9% last year). For 4Ws, EVs accounted for 7.6% (down from 8.1% in July, but up from 5.9% a year ago), while goods carriers rose to 4.9% (up from 3.6% in July and 1.8% last year).
