IONAGE and SundayGrids launch digital solar-based EV charging platform

Bangalore’s eMobility startup, IONAGE, teams up with SundayGrids, India’s Digital Solar platform startup, to unveil a Digital Solar-based EV Charging Platform. This solution facilitates EV charging with solar power, offering flexibility and sustainability for users.

The platform enables EV owners to subscribe and utilize digital solar credits for home chargers and across all connected charging networks. Additionally, it provides opportunities for Charging Point Operators (CPOs) to access IONAGE’s user base of 65,000 and implement digital solar-based charging in their network. This platform is designed for all types of EVs and catering to EV owners, Charging Point Operators (CPOs), EV manufacturers, enterprises, and government agencies interested in a sustainable EV transition.

In countries heavily dependent on fossil fuels like India, the use of electric vehicles (EVs) raises environmental concerns due to the CO2 emissions associated with electricity generation, averaging 820 grams per unit and translating to roughly 136 grams emitted per kilometer traveled. To mitigate this, IONAGE utilizes solar energy for charging EVs, to promote cleaner transportation and reducing their carbon footprint. Furthermore, IONAGE accommodates environmentally conscious users with limited rooftop space for solar panels, broadening access to sustainable solutions. Currently operating 3000 charge points nationwide, IONAGE plans to add another 3000 in the near term and aims for over 100,000 by 2028.

Speaking on the innovation, Vimal Kumar, co-founder and CEO of IONAGE Technologies, stated, “Our commitment to addressing critical gaps in India’s journey towards net-zero emissions is unwavering. Through innovative products like the Digital Solar-based EV Charging Platform, we are accelerating the widespread adoption of sustainable mobility, propelling India towards its ambitious carbon emissions goals.”

Mathew Samuel, co-founder of SundayGrids, added, “SundayGrids is proud to collaborate with IONAGE in pioneering India’s first Digital Solar-based EV Charging Platform. Together, we are disrupting the accessibility and perception of solar energy, empowering individuals and businesses to embrace clean energy solutions.”

The Indian government has announced the ‘Pradhanmantri Suryoday Yojana‘, aiming to install solar rooftops to provide free electricity of up to 300 units monthly for one crore households. Additionally, in 2022, the government proposed increasing solar power capacity to 100 GW. This commitment aligns with the national drive towards clean and sustainable energy solutions and coincides with the launch of the platform.

In 2021, India recorded over 1 million EV sales, projected to hit 50 million by 2030. Despite being the fourth-largest car market globally, EV penetration remains at just 1%, per Moody’s Investors Service. Government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) policies have accelerated adoption, but the main challenge is reliable, accessible, and affordable EV charging infrastructure. IONAGE addresses this, aiming to capture 50,000 subscriptions and install over 60 MW through their platform by 2025. Together with SundayGrids, they accelerate renewable energy adoption for a sustainable future.
