India ICE vs EV sales | For top 2W, 3W, 4W OEMs in May 2026

In May 2026, the overall penetration of EVs in the 2W market was 9.2%. For passenger 3W L5 autos, it was 50.3%, and for cargo 3W L5 autos, it was 29.6% and for 4W, it was 6.6%. This article aims to showcase where EV sales stand compared to the overall vehicle sales in the 2W, 3W, and 4W categories.

In May 2026, the Indian two-wheeler market remained dominated by ICE vehicles, with Hero MotoCorp retaining its leadership position with total sales of 5,17,753 units. However, EVs contributed only 3.7% of its sales. Honda Motorcycle continued to be almost entirely ICE-driven, with EVs accounting for just 0.1% of total sales. Among traditional OEMs, Bajaj Auto recorded the highest EV penetration at 19.8%, followed by TVS Motor at 11.9%, reflecting their growing presence in the electric two-wheeler segment. Suzuki Motorcycle (0.04%), India Yamaha Motor (0.2%), and Royal Enfield (2 EV units) remained largely focused on ICE products with negligible EV contribution. Among pure EV manufacturers, Ather Energy (28,190 units), Ola Electric (15,139 units), and Ampere Vehicles (7,696 units) reported 100% electric vehicle sales.

In May 2026, Bajaj Auto led the three-wheeler passenger segment with sales of 33,520 units, including 11,115 electric vehicles, resulting in an EV penetration of 33.2%. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility continued to demonstrate strong electrification, with 10,101 EVs out of 10,315 total sales, taking its EV share to 97.9%.

TVS Motor recorded 5,524 units, with EVs accounting for 62.4% of its sales, while Piaggio Vehicles sold 5,158 units, of which 21.8% were electric. Atul Auto remained predominantly ICE-driven, with EVs contributing 15.1% of its 1,075-unit sales.

Among pure electric manufacturers, Mini Metro (492 units), Dilli Electric Auto (443 units), and TI Clean Mobility (342 units) reported 100% EV sales, reflecting their fully electric product portfolios in the passenger three-wheeler segment.

In May 2026, Bajaj Auto remained the leading player in the three-wheeler cargo (L5) segment with sales of 5,311 units, though EVs accounted for only 10% of its volume. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility recorded the highest EV penetration among major legacy OEMs at 60.1%, with 615 electric vehicles out of 1,023 total sales. TVS Motor also showed significant electrification, with EVs contributing 34.9% of its 407-unit sales.

Piaggio Vehicles (4.9%) and Atul Auto (4.5%) remained largely dependent on ICE models, with relatively low EV adoption in the cargo segment. Among dedicated EV manufacturers, Omega Seiki (331 units), Dilli Electric Auto (229 units), and Euler Motors (218 units) reported 100% EV sales, reflecting their fully electric product portfolios in the cargo three-wheeler market.

In May 2026, the passenger vehicle segment was led by Maruti Suzuki India with sales of 1,64,330 units, though EVs accounted for only 1% of its volume. Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra continued to be the largest contributors to EV adoption among mainstream OEMs, with EV penetration of 18.6% and 12.1%, respectively. Hyundai Motor India (1%) and Kia India (1.4%) recorded relatively low EV shares.

JSW MG Motor India stood out with the highest EV penetration among major manufacturers at 85%, reflecting its strong focus on electric vehicles. Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, Honda Cars India, Renault India, and Nissan Motor India reported no EV sales during the month, remaining entirely ICE-driven.

In the luxury segment, BMW India recorded an EV share of 25.5%, ahead of Mercedes-Benz India at 15.7%. Meanwhile, VinFast Auto India reported 1,224 units, all of which were electric, making it a 100% EV player. Overall, JSW MG Motor India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and VinFast continued to drive EV penetration in the passenger vehicle market.

In May 2026, EV penetration increased across all major vehicle categories compared to both April 2026 and May 2025. The highest EV share was recorded in the L5M three-wheeler passenger segment at 50.3%, up from 43.1% in April 2026 and 32% a year earlier. EV penetration in the L5N three-wheeler cargo segment reached 29.6%, compared with 24% in April 2026 and 22.9% in May 2025.

In the two-wheeler segment, EVs accounted for 9.2% of sales, up from 7.9% in April 2026 and 6.1% in May 2025. Passenger vehicles (4W) recorded an EV share of 6.6%, compared with 5.9% in the previous month and 4.6% a year ago. Goods carriers also saw continued growth in electrification, with EV penetration rising to 2.9%, up from 2.2% in April 2026 and 1.1% in May 2025.
