Compage develops heavy rare-earth free PMSM motors for EV applications
Compage Automation Systems has announced the launch of a new range of high-capacity, heavy-rare-earth-free Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), including 90 kW, 120 kW, 180 kW, 250 kW, and 300 kW variants. The company has initiated customer-level validation of these motors, with ongoing trials at a Kolkata-based OEM in the construction and mining equipment segment.
Our team connected with Akshay Aggarwal, Director & CTO, Compage Automation Systems, to understand the key details behind this launch. The launch will be relevant for Indian e-bus OEMs who will be able to source motors domestically, Akshay highlights.

What type of magnet material is used in your new PMSM motors?
We use NdFeB light rare-earth magnets. These do not contain heavy rare-earth elements.
Is the supply chain dependent on China?
The magnet material is still sourced from China, but it does not fall into any restricted or banned categories. All other components are sourced locally in India.
Regarding the high-capacity motors (90 kW–300 kW) you mentioned, could you share the commercial readiness status?
The motors are currently under validation. Direct customer-level testing is already in progress.

Are any OEMs evaluating the motors?
Yes. A Kolkata-based construction and mining equipment OEM is testing the motors.
Where are the motors manufactured?
The motors are produced at our manufacturing facility in Faridabad, Haryana.
Further updates are expected as validation progresses.
