Electric cars start gaining ground in India | Bangalore, Delhi top cities

EVreporter’s data analysis of car sales in CY 2025 [Vahan + Telangana (until July ’25)] shows that 1,13,854 electric cars have been registered from January 2025 to August 2025.

  • 27,72,559 cars were registered in India from Jan-25 to Aug-25, of which 1,13,854 were electric. Of these electric car registrations, more than 90% were registered as personal cars, while the rest were registered as cabs.
  • In comparison, 66,808 electric cars were registered between January 2024 and August 2024.
  • EV penetration in the 4W market was 4.1% in CY’25, compared to 2.5% in CY’24 (Till Aug).

The EV penetration trend for cars show notable uptake in the last few months, depicting a rapid growth of e-4Ws adoption in India this year.

  • A state-wise analysis of e-4W sales shows that Maharashtra (19,877 units) recorded the highest e-4W sales in CY’25 (as of August ’25), followed by Karnataka (12,236) and Kerala (11,231).
  • Maharashtra accounted for 17.5% of total e-4W sales in India in CY’25 (as of Aug’25), while Karnataka and Kerala contributed 10.7% and 9.9% of the electric car sales, respectively.
  • Maharashtra recorded a YoY growth of 119% in CY’25 (till August), while Telangana accounted for an even higher growth of 201% in CY’25 (till July).

  • Tata Motors held the dominant position by selling 43,103 e-4Ws in the period Jan’25 – Aug’25, capturing a market share of 37.9%, but experiencing a 2.9% YoY decline.
  • JSW MG MOTOR India sold 36,344 units, marking a 216% YoY increase over its CY’24 (Till Aug’24) and securing a 31.9% market share in CY’25 (Till Aug’25).
  • The rise in Mahindra EV sales starting March 2025 is noteworthy. Mahindra secured the third position with a 17.8% market share, recording an impressive 307.13% YoY growth.
