Li Energy plans to set up 10 GWh lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Chennai

Li Energy, founded by Mr Sharanraj Baskaran and Mr Manavo Ch (Chief Technology Officer), is based in Tamil Nadu. The company aims to drive the transition to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions. Its vision is to establish 10GWh of lithium-ion battery manufacturing capacity by FY28.

Sharanraj Baskaran (founder) discusses their domestic cell manufacturing plans and preparation.

With a current team size of 20, we are focused on manufacturing prismatic form factor LFP cells in the beginning. We have developed a fully flexible line that can support other cell chemistries in the future as the space evolves.

By March 2025, Li Energy is looking to set up a 450MWh battery production line focusing on Electric 2&3 Wheelers, LCV & UPS applications.

In the next phase, the first of its kind in India, a fully automated line (with an annual capacity of 1.1 GWh) to cater to electric cars, buses, and container energy storage applications will be operational by Q3 FY25-26, generating employment for 250 people.

Our journey began with a singular purpose to address the growing need for sustainable energy solutions in India and beyond. Recognizing the immense potential of lithium-ion battery technology, the company has focused its efforts on creating facilities that deliver cutting-edge products while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability.

A strategic partnership with a major cell manufacturer with a planned capacity of over 250GWh provides Li Energy access to advanced battery technology.

Li Energy’s strategy is centred on innovation and scalability. This is evident in our proprietary Fully Flexible Production Design, a revolutionary system that enables the production of multiple applications on a single production line. This groundbreaking approach reduces capital expenditure (CapEx) and accelerates scaling, making Li Energy an agile and cost-efficient player in the energy sector.

The company has also designed in-house solutions for various EV and BESS applications, leveraging technology partnerships with global leaders to ensure the end products products meet the highest international standards.

Manufacturing facilities are designed to be state-of-the-art automated units, leveraging economies of scale to offer globally competitive pricing. These investments reflect Li Energy’s vision of becoming a key player in the international energy market while supporting domestic industries.

Li Energy has partnered with the Tamil Nadu Government to invest INR 300 Crores and create jobs by building a battery manufacturing facility in the state. We have received approvals and an incentives package with a 20% capital subsidy, employment incentives and tax benefits.

The promoters of Li Energy have purchased a land parcel for the manufacturing facility in the new Chennai-Bangalore National Expressway (Sriperumbudur).

Bharat is committed and responsible for accelerating the global transition towards Sustainable Energy, and Li Energy is set to execute the nation’s vision. We encourage collaboration with startups, Corporations, Financial Institutions, People, and all stakeholders for nation-building and sustainability.
