GreenLine secures $275M to expand low-emission trucking in India

GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd., an Essar venture and operator of LNG and electric-powered heavy commercial trucks, has announced an equity investment of $275 million to support the adoption of lower-emission heavy trucking in India. The investment includes a $20 million contribution from entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath.

The initiative aims to address emissions from India’s transportation sector, which accounts for approximately 15% of the country’s total carbon output. The funds will support the deployment of over 10,000 LNG and electric trucks, along with the development of infrastructure including 100 LNG refuelling stations, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and battery swapping facilities. According to the company, this could lead to a reduction of 1 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

India’s road logistics industry, with more than 4 million trucks currently in use, is among the most emissions-intensive segments of the economy. In line with national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, GreenLine is expanding its fleet of LNG and electric heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), which it says are offered at cost parity with conventional diesel trucks.

According to GreenLine, its LNG-powered trucks can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 30%. The current fleet, which consists of over 650 LNG trucks, is used by companies across various sectors including FMCG, e-commerce, metals and mining, cement, oil and gas, and chemicals. The fleet has covered over 38 million kilometres and is estimated to have avoided 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Anshuman Ruia, Director, Essar said “We are really excited about this game-changing shift in India’s heavy trucking industry. We see this as an opportunity to not only build the green mobility ecosystem, but also, in the future, invest in clean energy sources to power our electric trucks. This integrated approach will significantly reduce emissions, cut down on energy imports, and help drive India towards achieving a more sustainable, energy-secure future.”

Anand Mimani, CEO, GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd. said, “GreenLine has been at the forefront of decarbonising India’s heavy trucking industry, making significant progress from the very start. As leaders in this space, this investment brings us even closer to our vision of transforming India’s road logistics sector. We request India Inc. to embrace this evolving landscape and actively support the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future for all.”

Nikhil KamathInvestor and Entrepreneur said “The logistics industry needs to evolve—faster, cleaner, and smarter. Green mobility isn’t just a trend; it’s the inevitable future. Backing GreenLine is a bet on that future, where sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand. More companies need to take the leap, adopt green tech, and rethink how we move goods at scale. This shift is happening—with or without you.”
