Amazon India plans to deploy 1,000 Eicher electric trucks for Amazon Now operations
Amazon India has announced plans to deploy around 1,000 electric trucks by 2028, developed in collaboration with Eicher Trucks and Buses (a business division of VE Commercial Vehicles), to support Amazon Now operations across India. The deployment is expected to support the company’s transportation network for ecommerce and quick commerce operations.
As part of the collaboration, VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) has developed the Eicher Pro-X electric small truck for intra-city operations. The vehicles are intended to transport goods between Amazon fulfilment hubs located on city outskirts and Amazon Now micro-fulfilment centres located closer to customers.
Amazon stated that around 50 of these trucks have already been deployed, with plans to scale the fleet to more than 1,000 electric trucks by 2028. According to the company, the trucks are expected to cover 100–180 km per day and support multiple trips between facilities, with a charging time of around 50 minutes.
The fleet deployment is planned to begin in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The vehicles will support Amazon Now operations, which deliver products including groceries, personal care items, festive supplies and electronic accessories.
Amazon recently announced plans to expand Amazon Now to 100 cities across India and increase its network to more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres. The expansion includes cities such as Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore, and Vizag.
According to Amazon, the company has deployed more than 12,500 electric vehicles across over 500 cities in India for last-mile and middle-mile transportation.
Abhinav Singh, VP Operations Amazon India and Australia said, “We have always focused on making our operations more sustainable and have steadily expanded our electric mobility efforts, with over 12,000 EVs already deployed across India. We work closely with multiple OEM partners to build solutions suited to our needs, and are integrating electric transportation more deeply as we grow. The planned deployment of ~1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is yet another step in that direction.”
SS Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VECV, said, “The deployment of Eicher Pro X electric trucks marks a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable mobility. What makes this even more meaningful is that the electric small truck from Eicher has been co-created in close collaboration with Amazon, with a sharp focus on addressing their specific operational needs for e-commerce and quick commerce operations. This partnership-led approach ensures that we are not only delivering electric vehicles, but also enabling efficient, reliable, and scalable logistics solutions.”
Amazon and VECV have been working together since 2022 on the development of electric trucks for ecommerce operations in India. In 2025, Amazon deployed more than 100 electric trucks with multiple automakers across cities including Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
