Electric Vehicles Category-wise Sales Trend
India’s total automotive sales in Q1 FY2025-26 were 65,73,149 of which 5,49,736 were EVs, which accounts for 8.36% EV penetration in the quarter.

‘Goods Carrier’ refers to 4W cargo vehicles, including LCVs and HGVs, as categorised in Vahan dashboard. ‘E-rickshaw’ refers to low-speed electric 3Ws (up to 25 kmph) used for passenger transportation. ‘E-cart’ designates low-speed electric 3Ws (up to 25 kmph) used for goods transportation.
- The total number of electric vehicles sold in India from Q2 FY 24-25 to Q1 FY 25-26 (the last four quarters) is 21,72,393 units. The number of EVs sold in Q1 FY25-26 was 5,49,736.
- Electric vehicle sales are dominated by 2Ws and 3Ws, with a combined volume share of almost 91.41% among all vehicle segments in Q1 FY 25-26.
- For e-2Ws, sales decreased by 2.32% in Q1 FY 25-26 over the last quarter, while e-2W YoY sales increased by 32.7% (77,034 units).
- e-3W Goods L5 categories registered a QoQ decline of 9.75%. The rest of the categories witnessed a QoQ growth, including a notable 23.1% growth in the e-Bus category.
- e-3W Pax L5 sales witnessed the highest YoY growth of 118.09% (44,951 units), among all other segments. Looking at more YoY changes, e-4W and e-Bus witnessed growth of 87.72% and 99.49% respectively, in Q1 FY 25-26 compared to Q1 FY 24-25.

Note – 3W E-rickshaw and E-carts not considered for calculation of segment-wise EV penetration.

- In Q1 2025-26, the penetration of electric vehicles in the 3W passenger category reached an impressive 30.98%, up from 26.32% penetration in Q4 2024-25.
- EV penetration in the 3W cargo category stands at 22.39% in Q1 2025-26, up from 21.98% in Q4 2024-25.
- EV Penetration for 2Ws decreased, accounting for 6.3% of total 2W sales in India in Q1 2025-26.
- EV penetration in the 4W segment increased, making up 4.4% of total 4W sales in India in Q1 2025-26. EV penetration in the Bus sales declined to 4.96% in Q1 FY 25-26 from 5.01% in Q4.
