Ola Electric launches e-motorcycles | Plans to use in-house battery cells by Q1 FY26

Ola Electric has announced the launch of new products and a future roadmap across its electric vehicle (EV) and energy sectors. The company has entered the electric motorcycle segment with the introduction of the Roadster motorcycle series, including the Roadster X, Roadster, and Roadster Pro, with prices starting at INR 74,999. The company also previewed two future models, Sportster and Arrowhead.

Additionally, Ola announced plans to integrate its self-developed battery cells, the Bharat 4680 Cell and battery pack, set to be integrated into its vehicles by Q1 FY26, and showcased the new Gen-3 platform along with upcoming features in MoveOS 5. These developments were showcased at “Sankalp 2024,” Ola’s annual launch event at its Future factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

Ola Electric’s automotive segment approaches breakeven with a Q1 FY25 EBITDA margin of 1.97% and reports a record quarterly revenue of ₹1,718 Cr, holding a 48.63% market share.

Speaking at the event, Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and CMD, Ola Electric, said, “Today, 2/3rd of India’s 2W market consists of motorcycles, and with Ola’s entry into this segment, EV penetration is poised to further accelerate in the Indian 2W segment. We have already been successful in accelerating the EV adoption in the scooter segment, and with our futuristic portfolio of products, we are now focused on supercharging the EV penetration through our motorcycles. Coupled with the integration of our cells in our vehicles starting early next year, we are determined to chart a new course for mass EV adoption across India.”

Motorcycle Portfolio

Ola Electric launched its Roadster series of motorcycles, including the Roadster X, Roadster, and Roadster Pro. These models are built on the Ola Motorcycles platform. The company also previewed two upcoming models, Sportster and Arrowhead. Reservations for all Roadster variants began on August 15, 2024.

  • Roadster X: Features a peak motor output of 11 kW and is available in 2.5 kWh, 3.5 kWh, and 4.5 kWh battery variants. It has a top speed of 124 kmph and offers a range of up to 200 km. Delivery in Q4 FY25, with prices ranging from INR 74,999 to INR 99,999.
  • Roadster: Powered by a 13 kW motor, it is available in 3.5 kWh, 4.5 kWh, and 6 kWh battery variants, with a top speed of 126 kmph and a range of up to 248 km. Delivery in Q4 FY25, with prices ranging from INR 1,04,999 to INR 1,39,999.
  • Roadster Pro: The highest performance model, featuring a peak power output of 52 kW and a 16 kWh battery, offering a top speed of 194 kmph and a range of up to 579 km. Delivery in Q4 FY26, with prices ranging from INR 1,99,999 to INR 2,49,999.

The upcoming MoveOS 5 update for the Roadster Pro will include features such as ADAS, three-level traction control, integrated ride modes, and various access controls. Ola Electric also announced that its motorcycle portfolio would come with an 8-year battery warranty and access to the company’s existing charging network.

Battery Cell Integration

Ola Electric plans to integrate its Bharat 4680 battery cells into its vehicles starting Q1 FY26. The cells, currently under trial production at Ola’s Gigafactory. The new lithium-ion cell technology offers five times more energy (275 Wh/kg) than the commonly used 2170 form-factor cells in automobiles. It features a wider operating temperature range (10-70°C), a lifespan of over 1,000 charge cycles, and improved fast-charging, reaching 50% charge in 13 minutes.

Gen-3 Platform

Ola Electric introduced its upcoming Gen-3 platform, designed to improve scalability, performance, and efficiency in future electric vehicles.

MoveOS 5

Ola Electric previewed MoveOS 5, the latest version of its operating system. It includes new features such as Group Navigation, Live Location Sharing, and Road Trip Mode, along with performance enhancements like Smart Charging and TPMS alerts. The MoveOS 6 update will add advanced race-track features like Race Mode, Anti-Wheely, and Stoppie modes. The beta version will be available to users by Diwali 2024.
