Blue Energy Motors introduces electric heavy-duty truck with battery swapping technology

Green truck manufacturer Blue Energy Motors (BEM) has launched an electric heavy-duty truck equipped with battery swapping technology at its Chakan manufacturing facility in Pune, which has a capacity of 10,000 units. The truck was unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also inaugurated an electric corridor between Mumbai and Pune.

The Mumbai–Pune corridor is India’s first electric highway corridor and forms part of a broader plan to electrify major national highway corridors within the next three years. The initiative aims to support the country’s goals for cleaner freight transport and net zero emissions.

Earlier, BEM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to establish a new facility with an annual capacity of 30,000 trucks and an investment of ₹3,500 crore. The company has also signed MoUs for over 10,000 electric trucks in response to growing market demand.

Key features of the new electric trucks:

  • Battery swapping technology for extended range (282 kWh swappable LFP battery, module-to-bracket design)
  • Vehicle range: 200 km*
  • Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), 480 HP @ 1990 rpm
  • Gross combination weight (GCW): 55T with a suitable 3-axle trailer
  • Kerb weight: 8.8T (without trailer)
  • Gradeability – 24%
  • Launch of India’s first electric corridor (Mumbai–Pune)
  • Energy-as-a-Service model for heavy-duty trucks
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • High payload capacity
  • Integrated mobility intelligence system
  • Designed and tested for Indian road conditions

The newly launched trucks are designed for Indian operating conditions and follow BEM’s previous work in LNG-powered trucks.

According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, “This launch showcases Maharashtra’s leadership in sustainable innovation. Blue Energy Motors’ Made-in-India Electric Truck with Battery Swapping Technology, along with the Mumbai–Pune corridor, India’s first highway to go electric, aligns seamlessly with the nation’s vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat and for a greener, self-reliant future. I applaud their efforts in advancing both environmental sustainability and industrial growth”.

Anirudh Bhuwalka, Founder and Managing Director of Blue Energy Motors said, “We believe that this is the beginning of the EV Revolution in India for heavy-duty trucks. Our electric truck delivers unlimited range through battery swapping, the highest payload in its category and Advanced Mobility Intelligence for fleet reliability. The Mumbai–Pune corridor is the first step in building a nationwide network of sustainable logistics, driving India’s green freight future forward. With our Energy-as-a-Service model, we’re redefining fleet economics, offering reduced upfront capital cost, lowest TCO with highest payload, minimal charging downtime and making it well-to-wheel green with renewable energy.”

Anshuman Ruia, Director at Essar, said “This launch marks a milestone in India’s decarbonisation journey. It reinforces our commitment to advancing green mobility through cleaner energy, advanced technology, and sustainable infrastructure, driving a shift toward a low-carbon, efficient, and resilient economy.”

With this launch, Blue Energy Motors expands its electric mobility portfolio and contributes to the transition toward lower-emission freight transport in India.
