Tamil Nadu EV sales & penetration trend (Jan-25 to Apr-25)

Tamil Nadu ranks 4th among Indian states in EV sales from January 2025 to April 2025, with a total of 51,834 EV units sold during this period. The market is dominated by electric two-wheelers, which accounted for 83.88% of all electric vehicles sold in the state during this period, followed by electric four-wheelers at 7.56%.

Goods Carrier’ refers to 4W cargo vehicles, including LCVs and HGVs, as categorised in the Vahan dashboard. ‘E-rickshaw’ refers to low-speed electric 3Ws (up to 25 kmph) for passenger transportation. ‘E-cart’ designates low-speed electric 3Ws (up to 25 kmph) used for goods transportation. ‘L5 pax’ stands for passenger 3W L5M vehicles, while ‘L5 Goods’ stands for Cargo 3W L5N vehicles.

  • Tamil Nadu recorded an average of of 10,869 e-2W unit sales per month during Jan 25 to Apr 25.
  • The state shows increasing penetration of EVs in the 2W sales i.e. from 7.4% of 2W sales in Jan 25 to 7.8% of total 2W sales in Apr 25.
  • TVS Motor, Ather Energy and Ola Electric are the top three players in e-2W category (as seen on the next page).

  • The Tamil Nadu 3W Pax (L5) market is dominated by CNG and Diesel. For the passenger category, an average of 199 units of e-3Ws L5 are sold per month, with an average electric vehicle (EV) penetration of 5.7%.
  • The L5 passenger category has seen month-on-month growth in EV sales numbers, as well as EV penetration, over the last four months. EV penetration grew from 4.3% in January 2025 to 7.7% in Apr 2025.
  • Among leading cities, Madurai recorded the highest share of EV sales in the category, 25.7%, with 204 units, while Chennai accounted for 192 units (24.2%) over the observation period.

  • Tamil Nadu 3W Goods (L5) market is dominated by Electric Autos. For the goods category, an average of 358 units e-3W L5 are sold every month with an average EV penetration of 49.9%.
  • Chennai recorded the highest share of sales, 14.2%, with 204 units, while Valliyur has sold 145 units (10.1%), and Kallakurichi recorded 132 sales (9.2%) over the observation period.
  • Tamil Nadu recorded an average of 979 electric car sales per month and an EV penetration of 4% for the category during January to April 2025.
  • Chennai with 1614 units (41.2%), followed by Coimbatore with 536 units (13.7%) and Tiruppur with 326 units (8.3%), show the highest sales in the e-4W category for the time period.

  • Tamil Nadu recorded a sales average of 101 e-goods carrier per month and average EV penetration of 1.9% for Jan to Apr 2025.
  • Viluppuram with 114 units (28%), followed by Perambalur with 51 units (12.5%) and Tiruppur with 46 units (11.3%) are the cities with the highest sales in e-4W goods carrier category for the observed period.
