India’s LOHUM to offer EPR services to EV brands in Nepal

LOHUM, a prominent Indian sustainable energy transition and battery materials producer, has entered into strategic partnerships with key players in Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) industry, including MG, Stellantis, and Tata. The initiative involves the recycling of an estimated 200,000 batteries from partner EV brands and the production of 25,000 MT of battery materials over a five-year period. This will assist Nepal’s EV industry stakeholders comply with the Aarthik Vidheyak policy for end-of-life battery waste management introduced by the Government of Nepal in FY 2023.

LOHUM, with a substantial market share (70-80%) in India’s battery recycling sector, specializes in comprehensive battery lifecycle management. The company will take on the role of Extended Producer Responsibility partner for end-of-life batteries for most EV brands operating in Nepal. This collaboration aims to bolster Nepal’s energy independence by recycling batteries and producing battery materials, thereby reducing China’s economic influence in the region.

This collaboration addresses Nepal’s efforts to expand its clean energy capacity without compromising its sovereignty, economy, and natural resources. It aligns with India’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s journey towards energy independence, countering China’s economic strategies. Additionally, it aligns with India’s broader vision of facilitating an equitable and affordable global transition to sustainable energy, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
