India’s Electric Vehicle sales trend | January 2025

India’s electric vehicle (EV) sales in January 2025 showed varied trends across categories compared to December 2024, as per Vahan Dashboard data. Electric two-wheeler (E2W) sales increased to 97,734 units from 73,651. E-rickshaw sales slightly declined to 38,824 from 40,844 units. Electric three-wheelers (E3W L5) for passengers grew to 12,885 from 10,632 units, while E-carts saw a marginal decline to 5,760 from 5,827 units. E3W L5 for cargo/goods increased to 2,490 from 2,130 units. Electric four-wheelers (E4W) rose to 11,247 from 9,116 units, and electric bus sales significantly increased to 360 from 176 units. Other EV categories saw a minor rise to 636 from 539 units.

A total of 19,74,997 EVs were sold in India between February 2024 and January 2025, based on vahan data from 1366 out of 1430 RTOs across 35 out of 36 states/UTs, excluding Telangana and low-speed e-2W sales. Monthly sales were as follows: January 2024: 145,079; February 2024: 141,743; March 2024: 213,104; April 2024: 115,911; May 2024: 140,662; June 2024: 140,140; July 2024: 180,174; August 2024: 157,275; September 2024: 160,476; October 2024: 219,658; November 2024: 193,003; December 2024: 142,915; and January 2025: 169,936. The highest sales were recorded in October 2024 (219,658), and the lowest in April 2024 (115,911).

The penetration percentage of electric vehicles (EVs) in the two-wheeler (2W) category increased from 6.2% in December 2024 to 6.4% in January 2025.

Top players for the month are OLA Electric, TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto.

The top 3 brands for January 2025 regarding the number of electric passenger 3Ws registered are Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Ltd, Bajaj Auto and Piaggio Vehicles.

In January 2025, Bajaj Auto, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, and Omega Seiki led the sales of electric three-wheeler goods.

In January 2025, the e-rickshaw sales were led by YC Electric, SAERA Electric and Dilli Electric.

Others include Skoda, Porsche, JLR etc.

Tata Motors is the clear leader, with over 44% of the market share, followed by MG Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Switch Mobility sold the most electric buses in January 2025, followed by PMI Electro Mobility and Olectra Greentech.
