Spiro Launches First 100 Electric Motorcycles in Ghana, Introduces Battery-Swapping Solution
African EV platform Spiro has launched its first 100 electric motorcycles in Ghana, introducing the Ekon 450 M1 V3 model and its battery-swapping solution to the country’s two-wheeler market. The launch marks the company’s entry into Ghana as part of its expansion across Africa.
The Ekon 450 M1 V3 is designed for personal and commercial mobility applications. According to Spiro, riders can save up to USD 2 per day in operating costs compared with conventional petrol-powered motorcycles. The company’s battery-swapping system allows users to exchange a depleted battery for a charged one in approximately two minutes, reducing the time spent waiting for charging.
The launch event, held under the theme “The First 100: Powering a New Era of Mobility in Ghana,” included a symbolic key handover to the first ten riders, followed by a convoy of 100 electric motorcycles through Accra. The event concluded at Accra Mall, where the company organised product demonstrations, test rides and live demonstrations of its battery-swapping technology. Following the launch, Spiro plans to conduct additional test rides and product demonstrations across Greater Accra to engage with prospective customers.
Kaushik Burman, CEO – Mobility, Spiro, said “Ghana represents a major opportunity for electric mobility, with a rapidly growing two-wheeler market and increasing demand from commercial riders and delivery fleets. With the launch of the Ekon 450 M1 V3, we are bringing a solution that addresses two key barriers to adoption: operating costs and access to charging infrastructure. Our first 100 motorcycles mark the beginning of our ambition to make electric mobility accessible at scale across Ghana.”
Maxwell Dodd, Managing Director of Spiro Ghana, said “Today, Ghana’s electric mobility journey shifts into gear. With our first 100 Ekon 450 M1 V3 motorcycles hitting the road, we are showing riders that cleaner, more affordable transport is no longer a vision for the future, but a reality they can experience today.”
Spiro is expanding its operations following a USD 270 million equity funding round and an additional USD 18 million in debt financing from the Africa Go Green Fund. The company aims to establish a presence in 20 African markets, with planned expansion into Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to the company, Spiro operates across seven African countries, with over 156,000 electric motorcycles, 2,500 battery-swapping stations, 11 mega swapping stations in Kenya and Rwanda, more than 57 million battery swaps completed and over 3.1 billion kilometres travelled by its electric motorcycles.
Spiro also operates motorcycle assembly facilities in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda, supporting its electric two-wheeler manufacturing and deployment operations across the continent.
