China’s Solid-State Battery Shipments are Projected to Reach 70 GWh by 2030
An industry report [China Solid State Battery Industry Market Report 2023-2027] published by the Global Automotive Community Organization (GACO) shows that planned production capacity for solid-state batteries in China reached 345.7 GWh in 2025 and 390.7 GWh by 2027. This write-up presents some of the information taken from this market intelligence report.
- The actual production capacity put into operation reached 43.65 GWh in 2025 and is expected to reach 55.75 GWh by 2027. In 2025, China’s actual solid-state battery shipments reached 5.9 GWh, and are projected to reach 11.9 GWh by 2027 and 70 GWh by 2030.
Brands and models expected to be equipped with solid-state batteries in 2027 include – SAIC Motor’s Zhiji L6, MG4, GAC Haobo HT, Yangwang Yangwang U9, BYD Haibao, Denza D9, Changan Shenlan L07, Avita 12, Chery Xingjiyuan ES, Geely Jike 001, BMW MINI, FAW Hongqi E-HS9, BAIC Alfa Romeo S, Dongfeng Voyah, NIO ET7 and NIO ES9, Li Auto Mega and Li Auto i9, XPeng P7, and Wenjie M9.
- Among the companies surveyed in the report, WELION has the highest revenue, projected to reach $353.4 million in 2027. Qingtao ranks second, with projected 2027 revenue of $237 million, and Ganfeng Lithium ranks third, with projected 2027 revenue of $168 million.
- By 2025, companies with solid-state battery teams exceeding 1,000 employees include CATL, BYD, Qingtao, WELION, Sunwoda, and ProLogium. According to the survey, among unlisted startups, Qingtao has the highest valuation at $3.5 billion, followed by ProLogium Technology at $2.3 billion, and WELION at $1.2 billion.
Based on the electrolyte content ratio, solid-state batteries can be divided into four main categories: liquid (25%), semi-solid (5%-10%), quasi-solid (0%-5%), and all-solid (0%). Currently, solid-state batteries mainly utilize three technological routes: sulfide, oxide, and polymer. Polymer batteries have an energy density of 400-600 Wh/kg, oxide batteries 450-700 Wh/kg, and sulfide batteries 450-900 Wh/kg. The sulfide route offers the highest performance ceiling and the fastest mass production progress; companies such as CATL, BYD, Gotion, and Farasis have all chosen the sulfide route.
The report also examines the specific production capacity of the companies:
- CATL plans to achieve small-scale mass production of solid-state batteries by 2027, aiming to reduce the cost to around $100/Wh. In May 2025, CATL’s world’s first 5GWh all-solid-state battery production line, located in Hefei, Anhui Province, officially commenced operation. Semi-solid-state batteries are already in mass production (energy density 500Wh/kg), and the all-solid-state battery pilot line has been completed with small-scale mass production planned for 2027, initially equipping Li Auto’s flagship MEGA model.
- BYD aims to reduce the cost of all-solid-state batteries to $70/kWh, on par with current liquid batteries. BYD’s 20GWh solid-state battery production line in Chongqing is scheduled to go into operation in 2026, aiming to reduce the cost of all-solid-state batteries to $70/kWh, on par with current liquid batteries. It will achieve an energy density of 400Wh/kg and is planned for small-batch mass production in 2027, used in BYD’s high-end brands, Yangwang and BYD Seal.
- SAIC Motor’s first all-solid-state battery production line, built in cooperation with Qingtao, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, with a planned initial capacity of 0.5 GWh. This production line will utilize a polymer-inorganic composite electrolyte technology, achieving an energy density of over 400 Wh/kg. The second phase will exceed 500 Wh/kg, and it is expected to be used in next-generation smart cars.
- WELION plans to achieve small-batch demonstration installations of 400Wh/kg solid-state batteries in vehicles by 2027. In June 2023, WELION had already implemented a 360Wh/kg solid-liquid hybrid battery in the NIO ET7, with a cost per kilowatt-hour of approximately $270/kWh, more than double that of current mainstream ternary lithium batteries.
- Svolt has completed its 2.3GWh semi-solid-state battery production line and will be the exclusive battery supplier for BMW’s next-generation Mini models.
- Axxiva’s 1.25GWh production line in Anhui has been installed and is currently undergoing commissioning. Mass production is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, with an energy density exceeding 400Wh/kg. It is anticipated to be used in Chery Automobile’s Exeed models.
It is projected that high-end electric vehicles will be the first to adopt all-solid-state batteries, with a penetration rate expected to reach 2% by 2028 and 5% by 2030. Solid-state battery shipments are projected to reach 70 GWh by 2030. All-solid-state batteries are expected to be launched after 2030, with energy density exceeding 600 Wh/kg.
