StoreDot and Volvo Cars collaborate on next-gen EV battery technology

StoreDot, an extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology company for electric vehicles, has entered into a collaboration with Volvo Cars to develop an enhanced battery solution for Volvo’s upcoming electric vehicle models. This joint effort will involve experts from both companies working together to create XFC cells tailored to fit Volvo’s future electric vehicle platforms. Anticipated testing of initial samples is set to commence next year.

StoreDot’s XFC batteries aim to overcome EV adoption challenges like range and charging concerns. As per the company statement, these batteries can charge an EV in under 10 minutes, akin to refueling a traditional car. StoreDot is actively working on advancements in battery technology through its ‘100inX’ roadmap. Their goals include achieving 100 miles of charge in 5 minutes by 2024, followed by 3 minutes in 2028, and 2-minute charge by 2032. StoreDot’s efforts are supported by notable partners and investors, including BP, Daimler, VinFast, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK, and its manufacturing partner EVE Energy. In 2022, the company demonstrated a live extreme fast charging of an EV battery cell in 10 minutes. They are preparing for mass production of this technology by 2025, as claimed by the official statement.

Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO, said, “This is a significant agreement for both StoreDot and Volvo Cars. Our teams are now working together at pace, developing B-sample cells for Volvo Cars’ next-generation fully electric architectures. There is a huge amount of work to do, optimizing all aspects of the system to meet Volvo’s exacting requirements. But we are confident that we will be delivering our fast-charging technology for real-world testing as early as next year with the goal to enable Volvo Cars customers to benefit from our game-changing XFC battery, which enables 100 miles of range in just five minutes.”

Javier Varela, Chief Operating Officer & Deputy CEO of Volvo said, “Volvo Cars is already a strategic investor in StoreDot, but this newly agreed collaboration takes our relationship a step further. We are delighted to be working together to develop advanced sample cells for our future EVs. There is a lot of work to be done but the opportunities to develop exciting new charging technologies together are huge. We can’t wait to see the fruits of our work being tested in the real world.”

Recently, StoreDot shared performance feedback from the assessment and integration A-Samples testing phase of its XFC electric vehicle battery cells. This comprehensive testing initiative involved 15 prominent global automotive brands from Europe, Asia, and the US, as well as key partners within StoreDot’s strategic ecosystem.
