In September 2023, a total of 1,27,793 electric vehicles were registered, slightly surpassing August’s 1,26,947 as per Vahan portal. Electric two-wheelers sales rose from 62,690 units in August to 63,746 units in September, followed by three-wheeler passengers in L3 and L5 categories at 46,686 and 5,651 respectively. Electric three-wheeler cargo had 3,037 (L3) and 2,070 (L5) registrations. Electric four-wheelers recorded 6,047 registrations, while electric buses saw 254, up from August’s 250.

A total of 14,38,506 EVs were sold during the last 12 month period from October 2022 to September 2023. The sales figure for September 2022 started at 94,904 units and steadily increased month over month, reaching a peak of 158,388 units in May 2023. Despite a dip in June 2023 with 102516 units sold due to a decrease in subsidies, the sales gained again in July 2023, and afterwards.

The sales percentage for EVs in the 2W category showed a slight decrease from 4.98% in August 2023 to 4.86% in September 2023. This followed an increase from 4.43% in July 2023.

Top players for the month are Ola electric, TVS Motors, and Ather Energy. Okinawa Autotech and Hero Electric registered strong Y-o-Y decline.

Tata Motors is the clear leader, with over 68% of the market share, followed by MG Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Tata Motors sold the most number of electric buses in Sep 2023, followed by PMI Electro Mobility and Olectra Greentech.
